As a nation, we observe Labor Day on the first Monday in September. It is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of the American worker. I would like to recognize the many contributions our Town employees make on a daily basis to keep Old Lyme moving forward. Our Town employees put so much effort into making this town special. I am grateful to work with such a dedicated team, who not only go the extra mile for the residents but also for each other. Please take a moment to say “thank you” when you see them around town or in Town Hall. Our Road & Public Safety Committee met for the first time this week. They have been provided some resources on traffic calming solutions, as we still have many concerns with drivers who exceed the speed limit. Their next meeting will be September 9th. You may notice that we have some new signs in town alerting drivers when their speed is higher than the posted allowance. I would like to thank Resident State Trooper Matt Weber for coordinating the purchase of these four signs. A special thanks to the Board of Finance for approving the purchase. Public Works will complete the paving on Sill Lane later next week. Painting and striping should be done soon after. On Wednesday evening we had a special presentation on the Coastal Wastewater Sewer Project from the Water Pollution Control Association (WPCA) on the sewer project. There were approximately 110 residents in attendance. Steve Cinami, the WPCA chairman, provided updated financial estimates and a projected timeline to move the project toward the bidding process. Carlos Esguerra and Nisha Patel came from DEEP’s Water Planning and Management Division to provide a bit of historical background on the project as well. Both presentations can be found on our website. The Sound View Parking Lot and the Swan Brook Sluiceway projects have gone out to bid. Both projects can be found on CT Source. Eversource has provided information regarding assistance programs. Please remember that Amy Bonatti, our Social Services Coordinator, is happy to provide confidential assistance if you are applying for any of these programs. REMINDERS- Parks & Recreation has great fall programs and activities scheduled for adults and kids.
- The Board of Selectmen will hold their first meeting of the month on Tuesday, September 3rd at 9:00 AM. Please note the change in day and time due to the Monday holiday.
- Open Space and the Old Lyme Land Trust have collaborated to offer two fall “Hikers’ Happy Hours” at Watch Rock. The first walk will be held on September 4th, led by the Old Lyme Land Trust. A short, easy, guided hike will start at 4:15, and afterward people are invited to re-group at the Old Lyme Inn for a 5 to 7 p.m. “Happy Hour,” where discounted drinks and appetizers will be offered.
- Please be aware the Trinity Solar representative, Robert Wolfe is driving a silver, 2017 Chevrolet Traverse, Plate: BN98903. He will be visiting neighborhoods on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout September and October.
This weekend brings about our unofficial end of summer. School has begun, some seasonal residents have returned home, and local businesses will be very busy this weekend. Enjoy the holiday weekend and drive safely wherever your travels take you! All my best, Martha
