Fuel Spill at 281 Shore Road

new update

OFFICE OF THE FIRE MARSHAL
TOWN OF OLD LYME
PRESS RELEASE
FUEL SPILL 281 SHORE ROAD OLD LYME CT
FEBRUARY 23, 2023

Thursday evening at approximately 7:50 pm, the Old Lyme Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a gasoline spill at the Bestway Food mart Convenience Store located at 281 Shore Road.  Upon their arrival they identified that a fuel tanker truck was in the process of making a delivery of diesel fuel at the convenience store. During the drivers activities, a release of diesel fuel was spilled onto the pavement surfaces at the store.

Initial evaluations by the fire department identified the spill size to be approximately 5 gallons.  Subsequent investigation identified that a larger quantity of approximately an additional 15-20  gallons of fuel  oil disbursed from the property along the eastern edge of Hartford Avenue.  The release was limited to paved areas of the convenience store and roadway.  The released fuel oil did not extend to or  enter any catch basins or storm drains.

The Fire Department deployed adsorbent materials to dike and contain the liquid runoff.  During this time the delivery company of the diesel Fuel contacted their clean-up contractor who was dispatched to the scene to perform cleanup activities.

Additionally, the Fire Department notified the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) of the incident.  DEEP dispatched a Spill Response Coordinator to the scene to coordinate the cleanup efforts.  The scene of the spill was turned over to the DEEP personnel on scene and was terminated by the fire Department at approximately 9:25 PM.

As of this morning, Friday February 24th, the scene cleanup activities have been completed and the convenience store has resumed with its normal operation.
