It is the beginning of mosquito season once again.  Precautions to avoid mosquito bites include:  Minimize time outdoors at dusk and dawn – Be sure door and window screens are tight fitting and in good repair – Wear shoes, socks, long pants, and long sleeved shirts – Clothing material should be tightly woven – Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors – Consider using mosquito repellent when it is necessary to be outdoors and always use them according to label instructions – When using DEET, use the lowest concentration effective for the time spent outdoors and wash treated skin when returning indoors – Do not apply under clothing, to wounds or irritated skin, the hands of children, or to infants less than 2 months.

Measures to get rid of mosquito breeding sites around the home include:  Dispose of water-holding containers, such as ceramic pots, used tires, tire swings – Drill holes in the bottom of containers such as those used for recycling – Clean clogged roof gutters – Turn over objects that may trap water when not is use such as wading pools and wheelbarrows.  Change water in bird baths on a weekly basis – Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, and when not in use, pool covers – Use landscaping to eliminate areas where water can collect on your property.

The Town is doing all that we can to make this a safe and pleasant summer.  Please feel free to call 434-4465 if you should have any questions or concerns.

Governor M. Jodi Rell announced in January 2008 that the state Department of Public Health (DPH) has posted a summary of the toys and products that were recalled in 2007 due to lead hazards.  The summary includes descriptions and photos of each of the recalled items and is available online at www.ct.gov/dph.

“Lead poisoning is a very serious issue,” said Governor M. Jodi Rell.  “It is especially important that parents be able to find a list of the products that have been recalled.  I urge parents to visit this website to see all of last year’s recalled items so that they can make sure that their children are safe.”
