The responsibilities of the Building Department are to enforce building, electric, plumbing and heating codes.
The Building Department enforces building regulations and state statutes, issues permits and inspects projects at different stages of construction. This department is also responsible for issuing certificates of occupancy upon completion of a job.
The Building Department receives building complaints, conducts investigations and issues necessary cease and desist orders. The Building Department make joint inspections with the Fire Marshal for compliance with the fire safety code.

In September of 2011, Old Lyme’s Zoning Regulations were revised to delete Year-Round and Seasonal Dwelling designations.
