"World of the Woodpecker"
Guest Speaker: Ted Gilman, Senior Naturalist and Environmental Education Specialist
From Audubon Greenwich Connecticut
Location: Old Lyme Town Hall, 52 Lyme St., Old Lyme

The sight and sound of a woodpecker pecking at the side of a tree is a familiar event in a birdwatcher's experience. However, while woodpeckers are familiar parts of the local bird life for most of us, they have some fascinating behaviors and adaptations which are not as well known. These birds can be found in a variety of habitats around our country and around the world. To help us uncover some of the lesser known details of these marvelous birds, Ted Gilman will share a PowerPoint and slide presentation, posters, preserved specimens and other materials. Ted will also offer some tips on identification and habitat preferences, general life history and conservation information, as well as perspective on the surveys and discussions which followed the reports of rediscovery of the ivory-billed woodpecker in 2004.~ Ted will also touch on the current observance of "The Year of the Bird" and share ways in which we can all take action to help in bird conservation.
