TOWN OF OLD LYME
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH
June 17, 2013
At 3:15 PM radar showed a line of strong to severe thunderstorms moving through central New York State ahead of an approaching cool front.~ Other thunderstorms have also formed in Southeastern New York and moved through Southwestern CT in the past hour.~ A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect for all of Connecticut and most of Southern New England until 9:00 PM this evening.
The line of thunderstorms currently in New York State is forecast to move to the East Southeast during the next few hours and move through Connecticut between 5:00 – 7:00 PM at 30 – 40 MPH.~ The primary threats from these thunderstorms are strong gusty winds and a threat of large hail in a few storms.~ Torrential downpours may also cause brief urban flooding in a few towns and cause a minor impact on the afternoon rush hour in a few towns.~ Other storms may also pop-up either in front of this line or behind the line.
Homeowners are advised to secure items in their yard and to closely monitor these storms as they move across the state.~ With the recent heavy rainfall any gusty winds have the potential to down trees and branches causing some additional power outages.~ To report power outages contact CL&P 800-286-2000.
It is recommended that residents closely monitor local weather forecasts and to review their contingency plans with family and friends.
