Phase I of the Landfill Closure Project, constructing the Transfer Station, has been completed and we plan to open the Transfer Station on Monday June 23rd.
The new facility features a scale that will be used to weigh residents’ vehicles as they enter the Transfer Station. Residents will be charged to dispose of bulky waste at the rate of 5.5 cents per pound or $110 per ton, with a minimum fee of $5.00. This will fund the expense the Town will incur to ship the bulky waste out of town. The Town is operating under a consent order with the State of CT to open the Transfer Station and to discontinue use of the landfill. We ask residents not to mix recycle items with bulky waste items because that will require extra processing that will tend to slow things down. Other improvements include an upgraded traffic pattern, improved loading areas and a generally more attractive facility.
Residents will still be able to bring recyclable items to the Transfer Station as they have in the past. Please consult the attached Transfer Station Fee Schedule to see what items may be recycled and any related costs. Please bear in mind that recycling saves the Town about $50 per ton as opposed to the cost of trash disposal and it is the right thing to do for the environment.
