The Town of Old Lyme will begin distributing covered recycling bins to residences the week of March 19. The blue recycling bins are imprinted with the Town Seal and are clearly marked to be used for paper only. Residents should continue to use their own containers for bottles & cans. Residences in seasonal neighborhoods will not receive their recycling bins until May.
The Town included funding for the recycling bins in its 2006 budget. First Selectman Timothy Griswold explains, “Recycling makes sense from an environmental standpoint, and also makes good financial sense. It costs our Town approximately $143 to dispose of 1 ton of trash. The cost to recycle 1 ton is approximately $98, representing a savings of $47 per ton.”
A residential curbside recycling program has been in place in Old Lyme since the 1980’s. Paper recycling includes books (hard & soft cover), brown paper bags, cereal boxes, fax paper, file folders, junk mail, magazines, newspaper, office paper, and phone directories. Other items recycled include rinsed bottles & cans, #1 & #2 plastics, and flattened cardboard.
A Recycling Instruction Sheet will be included in each covered recycling bin. Only one bin is available per residential address at this time. For additional information, phone Michele Hayes-Finn in the Selectman’s Office, 434-1605.
